Ernest Cole Award Photographic Award

This prestigious South African photography award was initiated under the auspices of the University of Cape Town Libraries, and offers a unique opportunity for photographers to complete an existing project. The winning photographer will receive R150 000, with which to complete the project, have exhibitions during 2013 and publish a book thereof.

The Ernest Cole Photographic Award is now in its second year. We are excited to invite photographers to submit their work for the 2012 Ernest Cole Photographic Award, with all submissions received by the 15th June 2012. These should be submitted in line with the submission guidelines provided on the website.

The Ernest Cole Photographic Award was established to stimulate creative documentary work in photography in Southern Africa. The emphasis will be on creative responses to South African society and is open to anyone whose work focuses on South African society, with preference being given to people living within the country. The purpose of the Award is to support the realisation of a significant body of work that the photographer has been engaged with.

The 2011 winner, Dale Yudelman, will be launching his book later in 2012 to coincide with exhibitions of his work at Wits Gallery in Johannesburg from 21 August-21 September, at the UKZNSA Gallery in Durban from 2 -21 October and at the AVA Gallery in Cape Town from 29th October – 23 November.

This Award has been made possible by the generous support of the Peter Brown, Gavin Relly Educational and Kirsh Family Trusts, and is managed by the UCT Libraries.
