Web & News Round Up: Nikon 1 V1 at the Dakar, Nikon D800 vs D700, Canon EOS 5D Mk II vs Mk II etc

It is the weekend and as often as we can, we like to wrap up some of the week’s events etc in a Friday post. Before we dive into news and cool things from the web, I must share with you what happened last night.

Nikon 1 V1 at the 2012 Dakar

Nikon South Africa hosted an event where motor sport photographer, Danie Van Jaarsveld, shared how he covered the Toyota teams efforts at the 2012 Dakar with a pair of Nikon 1 V1’s. It was fascinating to get his view on the cameras and have his really honest opinion on them. I know some people have thought that our review on the camera was a little harsh (though certainly we have not been alone in our opinion if you search the web for other reviews) but last night made me think we should look at the Nikon 1 again from a different perspective. We will in the coming weeks look to get our hands on the Nikon 1 J1 and also speak to Danie Van Jaarsveld about shooting the Dakar etc. In the mean time, here is a link to his coverage of the event.

Shut Up & Shoot

Host of the “This Week In Photo” podcast – Frederick Van Johnson – has launched a free, 10 part, audio photography course through MediaBytes. The idea is to arm you with the essential knowledge to improve your images and inspire you to actually go out there and shoot. Take photographs. Get creative. Stop making excuses… okay go to this link here already so I can move on to the next story and have a weekend to myself to go shoot 🙂

Review Round Ups

There are some very interesting reviews on the web this week starting off with Engadget’s review of the Lytro camera here. Also of interest to many will be the comparison of the Nikon D800 and D700 at high ISO’s published on Nikon Rumors here. On that note, EOS HD have published a comparison of the Canon EOS 5D Mk II vs the 5D Mk III at ISO 12,800 when shooting video (here). You can also find GeekBeat.tv’s review of the LensPen SensorKlear Loupe Kit here.

Check this video out! No it is not a form of torture, but for subjects in the American Civil War era it might have been considered such and today even more so.

In our digital age of near instant satisfaction it can be difficult to contemplate the painfully long process that one would go through to make a Tin Type photograph, but the end result is really beautiful. This is just one of the great videos shared by PetaPixel this week. They also have come other fascinating posts including:

And to end off this week’s round up, check out the video below (also shared by PetaPixel). You will have a new found appreciation for your fingers if you are an able bodied photographer.
